GPS tracker: Cell phones nowadays have a lot of devices inbuilt for various purposes. These devices make the phones even smarter with many features combined into one. GPS is one such facility that lets you keep track of your location wherever you go. The GPS (Global Positioning System) works by detecting the position and the distance from the satellites set up by the US military. Concerning these satellites, the GPS calculates the distance. Even the cellphones that don’t have GPS can calculate the distance by using the cell phone towers’ position and its distance to calculate the distance. Cell phones function by communicating with the towers connected to a base station in an arrangement called a “cell.” As you move through the cell, the base station monitors your cell phone’s signal and transfers it to the nearest tower. How does a GPS Tracker work?
GPS Tracker devices vary from a wide range of functionalities and features. The very basic GPS gives you the current location and guides you through a local map to a destination. Or the software or app helps you navigate to a location with the pre-existing map with it. The GPS indicates your route through a line for your reference. With reference to the top range GPS tracker devices such as Sitemap or Garmin Oregon, and smartphone applications such as Viewranger that lets you purchase full spectrum Ordnance Survey maps (1:25 000 or 1:50 000) which are then stored on your device (overlaid with any pre-planned route), with your current position marked.
Cell phones with the GPS receivers communicate with units from among the 30 global positioning satellites in the GPS system. The built-in receiver trilateral your position using data from at least three GPS satellites and the receiver. GPS can determine your location by performing a calculation based on the intersection point of overlapping spheres determined by the satellites and your phone’s GPS receiver. In simple terms, trilateration uses the distance between the satellites and the receiver to create overlapping “spheres” that intersect in a circle. The intersection is your location on the ground.

What is an AGPS?
It can take a long time to get a position fix with a standard GPS. Hence there are ways to speed this up, but unless you’re carrying an atomic clock with you all the time, or leave the GPS on all the time, then there’s always going to be a delay of between 5-60 seconds before you get a location. To save cost, most cell phones share the GPS receiver components with the cellular components. And you can’t get a fix and talk at the same time. People don’t like that (especially when there’s an emergency), so the lowest form of GPS does the following:
- Get some information from the cell phone company to feed to the GPS receiver. Some of this is gross positioning information based on what cellular towers can ‘hear’ your phone. So by this time they already phone your location to within a city or so.
- Switch from cellular to GPS receiver for 0.1 seconds and collect the raw GPS data (no processing on the phone).
- Switch back to the phone mode, and send the raw data to the phone company.
- The phone company processes that data (acts as an offline GPS receiver) and send the location back to your phone.
- This saves a lot of money on the phone design, but it has a heavy load on cellular bandwidth, and with a lot of requests coming it requires a lot of fast servers. Still, overall it can be cheaper and quicker to implement. They are reluctant, however, to release GPS based features on these phones due to this load so that you won’t see turn by turn navigation here.
More recent designs of an AGPS include a full GPS chip. They still get data from the phone company, such as current location based on tower positioning and current satellite locations. This provides sub 1 second fix times. This information is only needed once, and the GPS can keep track of everything after that with tiny power. If the cellular network is unavailable, then they can still get a fix after awhile. If the GPS satellites aren’t visible to the receiver, then they can still get a rough fix from the cellular towers.
How accurate is the GPS tracker?
The original generation of GPS devices gave an accuracy of around 15m and often could not get a fix in narrow valleys or where there was forestry cover. More recent devices and smartphones tend to use now High Sensitivity GPS which is much more efficient in forestry and can be accurate to around 4m once the device has completed a fix. Occasionally military jams the GPS signals. We are often informed of when this is scheduled to happen and include a news story on Walkhighlands if the jamming is likely to affect hillwalkers. Though there are also GPS jamming exercises which are not announced.
Do we pay for the GPS tracker service?
Yes, the Global Positioning System run by the United States Military, is free for civilian use, though the reality is that we’re paying for it with tax dollars.

Cell Phones without GPS
Even without a GPS receiver, your cell phone can provide information about your location. A computer can determine your location based on measurements of your signal, such as:
- It’s angle of approach to the cell towers
- How long it takes the signal to travel to multiple towers
- The strength of your signal when it reaches the towers
Since obstacles like trees and buildings can affect how long it takes your signal to travel to a tower, this method is often less accurate than a GPS measurement.
How Durable is a GPS device?
Most dedicated GPS devices are of rugged construction and are reasonably waterproof. Smartphones can be much more fragile, though waterproof cases are available, and they can be used with care. Some smartphones are ‘broken’ models which may be waterproof and better able to stand up to knocks. Probably a good choice for those wanting to take them into the outdoors.
